Shwe Yan Bye Kloster - Shwe Yan Bye Monastery

Shwe Yan Pyay Monastery, Inle Lake 2018

North of Inle Lake, near Nyaung Shwe, lies the Buddhist monastery Shwe Yan Pyay. Like the Shwe In Bin Kyaung Monastery in Mandalay, this one is built entirely of teak wood. It was built at the end of the 19th century. An architectural feature is its oval windows. It is a small but very elegant monastery. It is a jewel of Burmese architecture and reflects the art of building religious buildings during the feudal period.

The monastery has intricately carved structures of laminated gold teak as well as elegant statues and intricate adornments. The ceiling of the Shwe Yan Pyay Monastery is decorated with beautiful carvings and golden leaves. The seams of the windows are decorated with simple but artistic reliefs and carvings.

Unlike many other famous monasteries and pagodas in Myanmar, the monastery of Shwe Yan Pyay does not have the spirit of royal architecture. This monastery was built with the intention of providing shelter to poor boys in the region, who eventually become novices when they come here.
