Four kilometers northwest of the old town of Lijiang, at the foot of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, lies a small village hidden in the forest, the ancient city of Shuhe. UNESCO listed it as an essential part of Lijiang as it is a well-preserved example of a town along the old tea road and one of the earliest settlements of Naxi ancestors. It is called the ‘home of the clear springs,’ or ‘village of the dragon’s spring.’
Shuhe’s Old Town is known as the “Village of Leather” and has a thriving market on the 250 square meters central square, which used to be a leather and furs trading center in Lijiang. He is called “Four Heaven Square.” There are shops on all four sides. The red lacquered shutters and doors, the shiny black stone steps and the mosaic pavement in front of the stores give the place a serene, serene look.
