Representing the many still active temples in Luang Prabang, the Wat Phon Heuang can be taken. Here, Buddhism is actively practiced. The mostly very young monks live, work and learn in the walls of the temple. Every day at 4 pm the bells of the temples ring out in Luang Prabang, after that the monks grab the brooms and begin cleaning the temple grounds. A poignant ceremony that makes outsiders pause. Unfortunately, this tradition, as well as the alms walk of the monks is abused by most tourists for shameless photography.
Like most other temples, this one was destroyed during the attack of the Chinese Ho and later rebuilt or renovated. Today you will find in all temples numerous lovely details such as roof decorations and of course countless Buddha figures. Especially the elaborate wall decorations, usually in blue, red or black with lots of gold.
