Luang Prabang

City Views Luang Prabang, Lao 2017

The counterpart of the capital Vientiane is the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang. The town is located in the mountainous north of the country at the mouth of the Nam Khan River in the Mekong. It is the capital of Luang Prabang province. The city offers an impressive mix of Buddhism and French influence as it was the capital of the historical kingdom of Lan Xang and the French protectorate of Laos. A walk through the city makes you feel like you’re in another time and place.

Especially worth seeing are the 30 or so Buddhist temples, most notably Vat Xieng Thong, which bears witness to the so-called Luang Prabang architecture. Other attractions include the Royal Palace, which now houses the National Museum, Mount Phou Si, which offers a magnificent view of the city and of course the monks’ daily morning ceremony called Alma.

But the Luang Prabang area also offers attractions. Trips to waterfalls, elephant camps, bike rides and walks with village nights, kayaking and rafting tours, as well as cooking or weaving courses are possible. At the Kuang Si Waterfall, you can also visit the “Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Center.” A nursing station for the so-called moon bears.
