Trips to the Nam Ngum Reservoir and Dam are mostly from Vientiane, but Vang Vieng also offers self-drive to the lake. The sprawling Nam Ngum Reservoir is equally popular with tourists and locals for its peaceful, tranquil location, surrounded by various, very traditional forms of farming.
It is located above the northern edge of the Vientiane Plain, where the rice paddies surrounding the capital meet the mountainous terrain of the north. The 1971 stagnation of the Nam Ngum River is crisscrossed by deep, green waters that form a dramatic horizon lined with mountains. The Nam Ngum is one of the largest artificial lakes in Southeast Asia.
