Vang Vieng is a small town in the province of Vientiane in Laos. It is located on the Nam Xong River, also Nam Song, between Vientiane and Luang Prabang.
Apart from a few small temples, the city has not much to offer, but the surroundings are all the prettier: karst formations, rice fields, and rainforest. The numerous caves in the area and the impressive landscape make Vang Vieng a popular tourist destination.
The most popular caves are probably Tham Phu Kham beside the Blue Lagoon, Tham Chang Cave, and Tham Nam Cave. A little arduous journey, but entirely worthwhile leads to the impressive Kaeng Nyui Waterfall. Less touristy, but worth a visit is the Nam Ngum Reservoir. Here you can unwind, enjoy the tranquility and observe Laotian in their everyday pursuits.
