Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat, Angkor 2017

Angkor Wat is certainly the most famous building in Angkor. The temple was built between 1113 and 1150 by Suryavarman II. The temple, whose modern name means ‘royal city (that is a) monastery’, is also the builder’s mausoleum.

The temple complex covers an area of two square kilometers. Today only the stone buildings are preserved. All buildings of wood or other perishable materials have disappeared. The plant is oriented to the west, and so is usually entered through the access that leads across the moat. From here, you arrive at the extensive terrain around the temple, after crossing the Gopuram.

Even today, much of the wall paintings, as well as of the reliefs and stone work is preserved and so one gets an intense impression how this plant once looked.

Usually you leave the complex on the eastern side and can enjoy a nice green area as well as a stupa, which opens up different angles of Angkor Wat.
