The university town of Aschaffenburg is a city in the Bavarian government district of Unterfranken, part of the metropolitan region of Frankfurt/Main, the largest town in the region of Bavarian Lower Main and after Würzburg the second-largest city in the government district Unterfranken. Aschaffenburg was founded in the 5th century by the Alemanni; first settlements are already found in the Stone Age.
During the Second World War Aschaffenburg suffered severe destruction. All destroyed churches, and from 1954 the castle was rebuilt, the Pompejanum only in the time from 1984 to 1994. Today, these two buildings again have a particular influence on the Aschaffenburg cityscape. Many valuable buildings, however, were lost forever.
