The Outer Alster, which is about 164 hectares in size and up to 4.5 meters deep, is the larger, northern part of Lake Alster. Around the Outer Alster is the Alsterpark, whose western region was extended to the International Horticultural Exhibition (IGA) in 1953. Some of the most sought-after residential areas of Hamburg are located around the Outer Alster.
A walk on or around the Outer Alster makes you forget the world around you. One feels almost like on vacation. No big city noise, greenery, tasteful villas and beautiful views. Benches invite you to linger. Seagulls croak in the air; you almost could think you are on the ocean.
