Xiaoliuqiu, Little Liuqiu or Lamay Island is Taiwan’s only large coral island and the only one with significant population and human activities. It has an area of 6.8 square kilometers and is located 15 km west of Donggang. The eight villages on the island are populated by about 13,000 inhabitants.
Located on the southwest coast of Taiwan, Xiaoliuqiu borders Taiwan Road to the west and the South China Sea to the south. There are no rivers, so agriculture is tough. Most of the inhabitants live by fishing. In recent years, the island has become known for cage aquaculture.
Xiaoliuqiu is a popular tourist destination and known for its ghost stories and rumors of haunted caves. Some of the most popular local attractions include Black Dwarf Cave, Beauty Cave, Houshi Rock Formations and Venice Beach.
