Michelstadt is a city located in the Odenwald in southern Hesse, between Darmstadt and Heidelberg. With 16,632 inhabitants, Michelstadt is the largest city of the Odenwaldkreis. It is adjacent to the town of Erbach, which is situated directly to the south, and together with it forms the center of the Odenwaldkreis.
Michelstadt was first documented in 741 AD by the Frankish housekeeper Karlmann, the uncle of Charlemagne. Michelstadt is one of the oldest settlements in the inner Odenwald. Its castle has emerged from a Franconian estate.
Michelstadt has a picturesque old town with many half-timbered houses. The following buildings are worth mentioning: the historic city hall, the tower at the city wall, the Kellereihof in the city wall, and the late-Gothic city church. In the closer surrounding the Einhards Basilica, Castle Fürstenau, the hunting lodge Eulbach with the Eulbacher Park, the synagogue, the Roman baths and castles as part of the Neckar-Odenwald-Limes.
