Landwehr Kanal - Landwehr Canal

Landwehr Canal, Berlin 2016

The Landwehr Canal (LWK) is a federal waterway in Berlin and is legally part of the Spree-Oder Waterway (SOW). It connects the Berlin Spree, the Spree at the Osthafen with the Spree at the Spreekreuz in Charlottenburg, and leads through the districts of Kreuzberg, Neukölln, Tiergarten and Charlottenburg with a length of 10.73 kilometers.

The Landwehr Canal, formerly called “Schafgraben” or “Raftgraben”, was initially a drainage ditch, which drained water from the marsh area south of the former Berlin into the Spree. It was expanded to a raft ditch in 1705 to facilitate the transport of timber to the Royal Wood Storage at Halleschen Tor.
