East Side Gallery

East Side Gallery, Berlin 2016

The monument East Side Gallery in Berlin Friedrichshain is a permanent open-air gallery on the longest preserved part of the Berlin Wall in the Mühlenstraße between the Ostbahnhof and the Oberbaumbrücke along the River Spree.

In spring 1990, after the opening of the Berlin Wall, this section of 118 artists from 21 countries was painted over a length of 1316 meters. The artists commented on the political changes of the years 1989/90 in one hundred paintings on the side of the wall, which had been facing east-Berlin, with the most various artistic means. Because of urban development measures, it has not been preserved in the meantime, and instead of the originals of that time, only the replicas made in 2009 exist.
