Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city and economic center of Vietnam. Under its ancient name Saigon, which is still used today, it was the capital of the Republic of Vietnam until April 1975. Approximately 7.1 million inhabitants live in the administrative area of the city (as of 2009).

The town is located just north of the Mekong Delta on the right bank of the Saigon River. It is an industrial city, transport hub and cultural center with universities, theaters, cinemas, museums, monuments and parks.
