The Royal Palace of Phnom Penh was built in 1813 and has been extended or added to the individual buildings in the course of the Regency. It is centrally located near the Riverfront at the Sisowath Quay and right next to the National Museum.
In contrast to many other royal palaces, the Royal Palace of Phnom Penh does not consist of a large building, but of many smaller buildings. The entire complex is surrounded by walls, and although open to the public, the Cambodian royal family lives in the palace, so certain areas are closed. The vast complex with its mainly striking pointed roofs in golden color reminds to some degree of the Grand Palace in Bangkok.
The Royal Palace has served as the residence of the King of Cambodia since 1939. The Silver Pagoda and surrounding buildings can be entered.
