The Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) is located at the southern end of Phuket Island in Laem Panwa, about 10 km from the center of Phuket city. It covers an area of 8.4 hectares. The center was established under a bilateral agreement between the governments of Thailand and Denmark after the 5th Thai-Danish expedition in the Andaman Sea in 1966.
The primary goal of the PMBC is to carry out research and assessment of the abundance of marine and coastal flora and fauna in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Ecological and systematic research on oceanography and pollution in the mangroves, seagrass meadows, and coral reefs will lead to the development of new technologies for the more efficient management of resources.
The Phuket Aquarium is part of the (PMBC) and shows the amazing underwater world with over 150 different species of marine life most of which are indigenous species from the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.
