Koh Samui with its picturesque beaches is located in the Gulf of Thailand and is also known as coconut island. Most of the hills and mountains are still covered with tropical rainforest and coconut trees. Nature lovers will find their way to the heart of the Isle: lush rainforests, a diverse animal world, and the tropical flora offer an exotic dream backdrop for hikers and explorers. The numerous waterfalls invite you to a refreshing bath.
Today the beauty of the island is at least partly at risk. The rain forest had to give way to plantations, and the coral in front of Koh Samui is considered to be threatened. The crops of plantations are the most important source of income for the island after tourism.
Notwithstanding its great popularity, the coconut island will surely retain its nickname in the future. Despite the constant tourist development since the 1970s, when the island was discovered by the first backpackers, the locals attach great importance to the preservation of their palm trees.
