Tian Tan Buddha

Tian Tan Buddha, Hongkong 2008

The so-called Tian Tan Buddha, also called Tiantan Buddha, is a bronze Buddha statue at Ngong Ping in the monastery Po Lin on Lantau Island in Hong Kong. The construction of the Tian Tan Buddha began in the late 1980s. On 29 December 1993, the monument was inaugurated.

The sculpture, also called Big Buddha, is one of the five largest Buddha statues in China and the largest Buddhist monument in Hong Kong.

Since the completion of the Fo Guang Buddha, also Foguang Buddha in 2011 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, it is the world’s second-largest free-standing Buddhist statue in a sitting posture.
