Gunung Batur

Gunung Batur, Bali 2007

The Gnung Batur is one of the two volcanoes in the east of Bali. He is still active and spits a little smoke and ashes from time to time. Even if he is the most active of Bali’s volcanoes, he is smaller with his 1717 meters than his neighbor of the Gunung Agung (3142 m).

Originally, the mountain was much higher, but with a violent eruption some 30,000 years ago, its upper third was blown off, and the outer caldera (caldera) with the crescent Batur lake arose. The outer caldera measures approximately 10 by 14 kilometers and is one of the largest in the world. The interior, which has been around for 20,000 years, is 6.5 times 9.5 km.

The Batur lake is up to 100 meters deep and quite fresh for Balinese conditions with 20 degrees of water temperature. On the east bank is the village of Trunyan with its extraordinary cemetery: the dead are buried here in the earth under bamboo stands.
