The Beihai Park, west of the Forbidden City, is considered another masterpiece of Chinese gardening. Both the canals in Hangzhou and Yangzhou, as well as the Suzhou Gardens, were the inspiration.
Already in the 11th century, the garden was built during the Liao Dynasty but experienced some change over time. More than half of the 0.72 km² area is occupied by the lake, in the center of which is the Jade Flower Island with the White Pagoda.
Since 1925 the Beihai Park is open to the public and is regarded as the most popular park in the city center of Beijing. The Beijing Axis was nominated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage including the Beihai Park.
