Tashi Lhunpo Kloster - Tashi Lhunpo Monastery

Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Tibet 2016

The Tashi Lhunpo Monastery is located in the west of the city of Shigatse and was the seat of the Panchen Lamas. The monastery was founded in 1447 by Gendün Drub. Gendün Drub was one of the two most prominent disciples of the Tsongkhapa, the great reformer who founded the Gelug tradition.

The tallest building of the Tashilhunpo is the Maitreya temple. It was built in 1914 to accommodate the largest statue of a Maitreya Buddha in Tibet.

The Panchen Lamas succeeded in gradually expanding the monastery over the centuries, as well as many valuable sutra and cultural monuments. It represents, as one of the last monasteries, the Tibetan top architecture, attracting thousands of Buddhists every year.
