Tai’an is located in the province of Shandong about 70 km south of the provincial capital Jinan and covers an area of 7,761 km². The city has about 5.47 million inhabitants (as of 2002).
The most famous excursion destination in Tai’an is Mount Tai Shan (1,545 m), which is also called East Mountain and is located North of the city. Already Confucius referred to it, and it belongs to the sacred mountains of China. The most famous temple of the city is the Daoist Dai-Miao Temple complex.
