The Lama Temple, also called Yonghe Temple, literally means Palace of Peace and Harmony. It is the largest Lamaist temple outside Tibet. It is the temple and monastery of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.
The complex consists of an ornamental garden, several courtyards, various halls and the highlight, the hall of infinite happiness. The buildings and artworks are a mixture of Han Chinese and Tibetan style.
In 1694 the building was started during the Qing Dynasty. First, the temple was an official residence of the court eunuchs, only later, in 1722, half of the compound was converted into a Tibetan temple.
