Beijing is the capital of the People’s Republic of China and with 21.5 million inhabitants one of the largest cities in the country. In total, the urban area spreads to 16,807 m². From 2017, the metropolis is to be the core of a megalopolis of 130 million inhabitants called Jing-Jin-Ji.
But Beijing was not always the capital in China’s turbulent history. Some of the most famous “other” capital cities are Nanjing, Xi’an, Luoyang and Hangzhou.
Among the most important and famous sights of the city are the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Great Wall, Summer Palace and Tian’anmen Square. Also, the city offers countless other interesting places such as the Hutongs, Houhai, Beihai Park, the Lama Temple or the Jingshan Park.
