Himmelstempel - Temple of Heaven

Temple of Heaven, Beijing 2015

The Tian Tong Temple, located in the south of Beijing, covers a total area of 273 ha. The construction of the compound began in 1421 and took 14 years. The temple complex served as a cult and sacrificial site for the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Here, the emperors had to hold a dialogue with heaven several times a year. The elaborate ceremony followed a strict protocol, whereby every place of the facility had a special significance. As sacrifices, the Emperor brought incense, animals, wine, jade, and silk.

In 1998, the Temple of Heaven was included in the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. In addition to the Forbidden City, it is one of Beijing’s main attractions.
